Several weeks ago I got an email from Drew explaining that he had plans to propose to his girlfriend, and he wanted me to photograph it! I was SO excited- and only got more excited as I heard about his plan. I'll walk you through it as I show you the photos...

Drew had told Elizabeth for months that they had a special dinner for his work they had to go to. So Elizabeth bought a dress, was getting her hair done, and was almost ready when she got a call from Drew:

Drew told her he'd had to drop something off for a group project on the Texas Tech campus, but now his car wouldn't start. So, Elizabeth needed to come pick him up. Once she got there, he told her he'd lost the special pin his boss had given him to wear to the dinner...right in front of the seal.

Elizabeth hopped out of the car (shoeless- love it!) to help him look. As soon as she turned her back, down on one knee he went.

She was SO suprised- he had told her it would be at least December before he could propose. The next few minutes were full of pure joy, realization of all the elaborate lying Drew had done (nice job, Drew!), and total excitement.

I can't tell you how special it was to witness this moment in their lives. After being with these two for under and hour, it was clear that they are a perfect match...totally in tune with each other, excited about the future, and in love! I totally, absolutely, loved getting to document this story for them.

Congratulations, you two! I wish you all the best- through thick and thin!

I had so much fun with Samantha shooting her bridals in Fort Worth a few months ago. This gorgeous lady got married just a couple of weeks ago and so now I'm free to share her bridals with you! Sam is simply stunnning in her dress- and I loved getting to chase the light with her in this session. Here are a few of my favorites.

Don't you think she looks a bit like Jennifer Aniston?

Wedding post coming soon!

I am so, so excited to get to shoot the wedding if this fun couple. When I first met Richard and Joni, Richard was not shy about his reservations with photographers- like many people, he'd had more than one awkward experience with a photographer, and couldn't justify the cost considering all the other expenses that come with a wedding. Joni, on the other hand, had done her research and decided that photography was a priority for her- can you imagine the pressure I was feeling heading into this shoot?!?

Well, it was so much fun. I think I was able to convince Richard that getting his photo taken should be FUN, and that it was all worth it to invest in their photography. I even got an email from Joni a few days after the shoot that said:

Hi Lissa,

Just wanted to thank you again for well...just being so great and making our photo session so relaxed and FUN!  I couldn't stop smiling for almost a half an hour afterward...hope my pictures aren't too "cheesey".  I hate to say that i think i'm "that girl" who just can't wait till you blog...anxious.  Thanks for a memorable photo shoot...I think Richard finally warmed up to the idea of a wedding photographer (thanks to you).  He also won't stop saying "holla" (also thanks to you)!!

JONI

Yes, I have a habit of yelling, "Holler!" - say it in a white girl with a Texas accent kind of way- when I really like a shot I'm getting...I know, I'm a dork...

Well, Joni- here is your blog post! And you look absolutely gorgeous! Enjoy!

Allen and Paige are the very best kind of nerdy. (Note: I identify myself as a nerd and take it as a compliment. :) These two have just the type of personalities that I love to work with- a little quirky, very laid back, and totally in love. They suggested we begin their shoot at the TTU library- a place where they've spent much of their time over the past few years. I was in love with the rows and rows of books.

Why yes that is a collection of Ray Bradbury they are reading. Further proof they are cool.

How much do you love Paige's outfit? Of course, it's from Urban

I read this fantastic article on the RELEVANT magazine website today, and thought it was worthy of sharing here.

In my experience, having seen at least a hundred marriages begin, I can vouch for the negative effect our "perfectionist" culture has put on relationships. Thankfully, I am lucky that the vast majority of couples I get to work for are ones who have a realistic, genuine love for the other person- flaws and all. :)

Please take a minute to read the article HERE!

Oh my goodness, these two- I just loved shooting with them so much! Right from the start it was like we were on the same page, and their session went so smoothly. Exactly the kind of experience I'd want for every couple. They're temporarily in Lubbock for law school but will be headed back to the Austin area to get married! I loved so many of the images we shot- get ready for my favorites!

the "b" word

lissa-anglin2 Comments

This post is about a word that has been known to madden, frustrate, and have me running for the hills...BUDGET. Surely you weren't thinking of another "b" word, right?

Why, might you ask, do I care to write about such a boring and dull thing on my blog which is mostly filled with lovey-dovey couples and weddings? Because with every wedding comes a budget.

And every marriage comes with a budget. The first few months that Shawn and I were married we realized that neither of us had paid much more than a cell phone bill monthly. We were paying-the-bills virgins. We had several weeks where we were totally, completely broke...and several where we lived like kings. (These were usually after the paychecks came.) Then one day we realized, "Hey, we get these same bills every month- and they are due on the same day every month...what if we figured out the best order to pay them? And then set aside some money so that we made sure they all got paid?"

DUH. And so our monthly budget was born. We realized that we'd rather keep our lights on than go out to eat one more time. Of course we wanted to go out to eat, but keeping the lights on had much better long-term benefits. :)

I now embrace our monthly budget- and am empowered by it, in fact. Shawn and I sit down monthly to review our spending and set new goals for our future. Doing this has helped us achieve things financially that we never would have been able to without some intentional foresight.

Loose flowers in thrifted vases from Jeff + JoAnna's wedding earlier this spring.

I'm posting today because I realize just how important the same foresight is with a wedding budget. I have heard of (or spoken with) too many couples who have decided to cut or reduce their wedding photography budget in order to compensate for other items competing for those precious dollars. Please know that I am not writing out of spite or desperation- just a desire to see every bride and groom have the very best images they can afford!

Here are my tips on your wedding budget:

1. Sweat the small stuff.

The shoes, the favors, the monogrammed this-or-that...it's all small stuff. Every wedding-oriented magazine or website is littered with tiny reminders of things you "need" to buy. Do you already have some nice shoes that would work with your dress? Could you borrow your mother's earrings? Could you make your own bridesmaids' gifts? Each of these small items can really add up and end up demanding a huge portion of your budget. Before you make any decisions, sit down with your fiance and make a list of priorities- determine which items deserve a larger portion of your budget and which are not-so-necessary. Doing this will keep you grounded when you're confronted with additional "must-have" items like the disposable cameras on the reception tables...seems like a good idea until you spend 130.00 getting them all developed to realize your cousin's 5 year old stole them all and took pictures of the floor all evening. :)

2. Choose an artist.

I have always felt a little lucky to start out my career as a photographer in West Texas because, well, it's ugly. And flat. We have about 10 trees here, and they are surrounded by yellow grass. I feel that if I can make that scenery look great, I will have mastered my craft. :) It's a journey I embark on with each shoot, and it truly pushes me to be more creative.

Someone once told me that it is wiser to spend $10 on an ugly cake and $100 on a photographer that can make the cake look amazing, than it is to spend the $100 on an amazing cake and $10 on a photographer who will make it look ugly no matter how amazing it really is.

It's so important that the vendors you choose are artists- a talented florist can create a beautiful bouquet with the flowers picked from their backyard, and an experienced videographer knows to watch for your mother's face during your dance with your father. Whenever you are hiring someone with a skill, you will most definitely get what you pay for.

3. Go for impact.

There are so many things you and your guests will remember from your big day- the shape of your customized champagne glasses probably won't be at the forefront. When you're deciding on where to spend your budget, think backwards. What will have mattered the most? A beautiful location or a great band, perhaps the smell of your bouquet or the look on your groom's face when you see him for the first time. If you don't intentionally set aside funds to ensure that these elements will be part of your day, you may find they fall by the wayside. Your guests may have M&Ms with your name on them, but your bouquet is small and the flowers are the wrong kind. You may be wearing those "special" wedding undies, but the DJ was obnoxious and the photographer didn't know to capture your groom's expression as you approached.

Take some time to make sure your vision will come to fruition and invest in the elements that will make the most impact looking back.

As always, I am a BIG fan of DIY projects, and thankfully, the wedding blogosphere is full of ideas these days. Brides are really getting creative and filling their weddings with sentimental and beautiful touches that they've handmade. Here are a couple of blogs I love that are based on the bride who is on a budget and creating much of it herself:

I traveled to the DFW area to photograph Hunter and Shannon's big day a few weeks go. It was held at Colleyville Center in Colleyville, TX. This was a unusual wedding for me because I'd never actually met Hunter and Shannon in person- we'd always corresponded via email or phone. Once I got to be around them, though, I wished I had more time with them! These two are super genuine, loving people who were so much fun to work with. Shannon and her Mom created many of the details, and the message during the ceremony might just have been my favorite ever. On to the photos- here is just a taste of their day!

A few from their First Look...

Hunter requested a photo of him fishing- so we made it happen!

Each groomsman and bridesmaid had a different brooch or pin, which Shannon scavenged from thrift and antique stores.

The ceremony began just as the sun began to set. Perfect light!

Hunter and Shannon were the first I've seen to have a unity cross. It separates into two pieces- the outer and inner cross, and had some beautiful symbolism for husband and wife, and Christ and the church.

Congrats you guys! Thanks so much!

I was contacted by Chris earlier this year to shoot their wedding- which ended up being a little too close to my due date- so instead I got to shoot their Engagement Session! I had a great time getting to know them and Sonia's son, Sebastian, who was a great sport and snuck in for a few shots. These two live in Amarillo, and wanted some images that really reflected that. So, where else could we start but THE Amarillo landmark?
